The relative caregiver of people with schizophrenia: surcharge and life quality, in psychiatric institutions

Background: People suffering from mental illnesses such as schizophrenia, are mainly cared by relatives, who have taken an "informal care", which sometimes generates overload and cause deterioration in their life quality. The Objective of this study is to establish the association of surcharge and life quality in relative caregivers of people with schizophrenia in two private psychiatric institutions in Cartagena. Methods: A cross-sectional observational study was designed, 127 informal caregivers of people diagnosed with schizophrenia aged between 18 and 65 years participated in the study. To evaluate the surcharge, the Zarit test was used and for the life quality the Ruíz and Baca questionnaire was applied. To estimate the associations we used the Spearman correlation coefficient and Chi2 tests with a confidence level of 95% and values of p> 0.05. Results: The 78.7% of the informal caregivers were women, belonging to stratum 1, 39.4%, 44.1% with high school education; the prevalence of intense surcharge was 40.2%. It was observed that all caregivers had good social support, 76.4 were satisfied with the work they do and the 79.5% perceived a good quality of life. There was no association between surcharge and life quality, Chi square 0.14 and p> 0.05. Conclusions: There was no association between overload and quality of life of informal caregivers of people with schizophrenia, the majority of caregivers present intense overload.
