Description

This dataset contains primary information about 20 Venezuelans displaced abroad (VDE) on the border between the Department of Norte de Santander (Colombia) and the State of Táchira (Venezuela). These people are of legal age and work in La Parada in the municipality of Villa del Rosario, Norte de Santander Department, located on the Colombian side of the border. Nine women and 11 men were interviewed who worked in informal cross-border commerce, specifically moving their own or third-party merchandise and people along the informal roads previously identified as "trochas" along the border between La Parada (Norte de Santander, Colombia) and San Antonio (Táchira, Venezuela) and vice versa. The selection criteria for interviewees were Venezuelan nationality (VDE), living in Cúcuta or La Parada in Colombia, in need of international protection against forced returns and access to basic services; left their country after 2016; with migratory status (irregular - without any documentation - or regular who may have the Special Permit to Stay (PEP) or request for refuge or asylum); time in the business more than one year; live on the Colombian side of the border in different sectors, neighborhoods or communes; work every day in different "trochas" located on border limit. Access to the interviewed population was through leaders of two foundations that work with this vulnerable population: 1) Horizontes de Juventud, which operates in La Parada, and 2) Humildad Extrema, which operates in the city of Cúcuta. The leaders of these foundations collaborated with the selection of the people to be interviewed, according to the profile and inclusion and exclusion criteria explained above. The interviews were conducted during the month of June 2021, each interviewee signed the informed consent and the names used in the stories cited are fictitious.
